Neil Sylva (Director “Front Desk”)
is currently directing a 45 min documentary on Dafur, starring global citizen Debbie Bodkin.
In early, 2003, rebel groups in Darfur, the western region of Sudan, started attacking government forces and installations there, accusing the Sudanese government of neglecting the region and oppressing black Africans in favour of Arabs in the region. The Sudanese government responded by arming Arab Janjaweed militia for the purpose of systematically attacking the civilian populations of the black African tribes from which the rebels were primarily drawn, precipitating a humanitarian catastrophe that has been characterized as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The United Nations has estimated that 400,000 people have lost their lives and that some two million more people have been driven from their homes. The rape of women, many of whom are really only children, has been widespread. Relief workers have been targeted by the Janjaweed, the rebels groups, and bandits, making humanitarian access very difficult. After the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, when some 1,000,000 people were killed in just 100 days,
the world admonished, "Never Again!". But, just 10 years after the Rwandan Genocide and just a few years into the new century, the killing picked up right where the 20th Century left off. And, as usual, like in Rwanda, the international response was way too little, way too late.
How many people have to die before humanity will acknowledge the common bonds that bind us together?
Does a whole continent have to disappear?
Save Darfur!
